Furniture Project (Stranraer) Ltd
The Furniture Project (Stranraer) Ltd opened in July 1997 to collect furniture and repair, restore and sell it to people throughout Wigtownshire. The Furniture Project works with a number of disadvantaged groups, focusing on people’s natural attributes. The initiative aims to empower individuals in tasks which build confidence, encourage inclusion in the community and promote employment opportunities for long term unemployed people.
The project consists of a showroom, an office and training area, a warehouse. The Stranraer Furniture Project Workshop repairs, restores and builds furniture and ensures electrical equipment complies with safety standards. This allows the project to maximise the output of saleable goods as well as the added opportunity to provide on-going training.
Over the past five years around 9,000 items have been donated, with over 2,000 families, individuals and groups benefiting from the service. This also means that around 500 tons of waste has been diverted from landfill.
The Furniture Project relieves poverty through provision of placements for volunteers, community service volunteers, trainees and supported employees all with the common theme that they are long term unemployed or disadvantaged as a result of involvement in criminal activity, anti social behaviour, or affected by mental health or learning disabilities.
The team works together in our centre to learn new skills and undertake training whilst diverting waste from landfill by collecting and retailing of reusable furniture from the general public and to families who have a low income and the general public throughout Wigtownshire.
